HACIENDA NICHOLAS.

Legend has it that this beautiful adobe hacienda was built in 1910 by Antonio Abelard Rodriguez for his bride, the exquisite Dona Isabella. Isabella and Antonio had been married for less than a year when one day, while riding in the mountains, Isabella and her entourage were attacked by agroup of marauding banditos. When she did not return that afternoon, a frantic Antonio raced off in search of his beloved. When he found her she was at death's door but he was able to nurse her back to health. The experience so scarred her, however, that she was terrified to venture outside of the confines of their small home for fear of what lay beyond. As a testament to his love, Antonio built the hacienda so that Isabella might find refuge behind its thick adobe walls and peace in the enclosed garden courtyard. There she and Antonio shared a life of perfect love and romance for many decades to follow.

The Hacienda continues to provide a peaceful refuge from a sometimes- over whelming world. Walking into Hacienda Nicholas is like stepping back in time. The old adobe home in the heart of Santa Fe features a central "great room" with 20-foot ceilings, thick wooden vigas, softly colored hand-troweled plaster walls and a fireplace large enough to cook in.

Isabella's garden, filled with roses, wisteria, iris, daisies, pansies and geraniums, provides an ideal setting for leisurely breakfasts or afternoon tea. In warmer weather, birds sing in the trees as sunlight filters through the leaves. The outdoor kiva fireplace takes the chill out of the air on cooler days.
